Cheryl A. Batley (CB), 66, of Painted Post, went to be with her Lord and loved ones on November 11th, 2020 after an extended illness.

She was a 1972 graduate of CPP West High School. She also earned degrees from Corning Community College and Buffalo State College. She held a variety of jobs in her earlier career and retired, after 13 years, as a Service Coordinator for Arc of Steuben.

Cheryl was an avid sports fan from the time she was a little girl. She played softball in high school, college and beyond. She was a long-time member of a competitive pool team in Bath, NY. Her loyalty never wavered for the NY Giants, NY Yankees and Penn State (and you learned quickly not to call during game time, however, she did enjoy texting with her nephews and great nephew, Gunnar, during the games!).

Her favorite place in the world to be, when she was able, was her home on Keuka Lake. She had a love of beautiful sunsets, a moon in any stage, a float on the lake, and most of all a cup of coffee on the front porch. She has many lifetime friends from her childhood summers at the lake.

Cheryl is predeceased by her parents, Marcia and William Batley.

She is survived by her sisters, Linda (Roy) Swimley of Painted Post and Marcie Reno (Mark Anglehart) of Florida; nephews, Scott Swimley of Painted Post, Shane Swimley of Corning, Ron (Glenda) Gurnsey of Catonsville, Maryland, Jeff (Patty) Gurnsey of Horseheads and many great and great-great nieces and nephews.

Cheryl is also survived by many close friends, some friendships of over 50 years. One of her friends commented that if she was your friend, it was for life. We would like to thank each one for their support over the last 15 years of her struggles. Your cards, visits, and helping with care as needed meant the world to us.

Cheryl was especially fond of her little neighbor boy, Asher, who assisted her with many daily household chores.

Due to caution with COVID-19, there will be no calling hours. A private burial will be at Hope Cemetery in Corning, NY.

Cheryl was always generous in her support of youth sports, veterans, and animals. Any donations, in her name, can be directed to a charity of your choice.

Phillips Funeral Home & Cremation Service has been entrusted with the arrangements.

I had the pleasure of working with CB for many years at the Arc of Steuben and was proud to call her my friend. She and I shared a love of Little House on the Prairie and our favorite episode was Christmas at Plum Creek and many times she would let me know when it was scheduled to air. We also had fun picking on each other over football as she was a huge Giants fan and me a Cowboys fan. I will surely miss her birthday texts and Christmas cards and her great laugh. She was a wonderful lady and will be greatly missed. My sincere condolences to her family and friends.

My oldest friend, we met when CB was 8, 58 years of friendship. You could not find a more loyal fun loving friend. One of her favorite sayings was “ A true friend is more valuable than any cause”. Your family was, and I feel, still is my family. You were part of my family as well. I love you my friend. We all will miss you terribly.

CB has been like a big sister to me all my life ,and she is part of my heart always. A truly unique individual ,she had one of the best senses of humor ever, and could make me laugh hard just with a look always. She was so smart and fiercely independent and had a huge and open ,sentimental heart for people, and animals and nature. And of course Keuka lake. Always easy and ready to share and show love with others. A quality human being who connected with strangers quickly and loved ones deeply. She was an example to look to for hard work, engagement and enthusiasm for life ,her passionate interests, the world and other people. A memory that could amaze you with her detail and accuracy . But most of all her love for laughter and ability to keep laughing ,mostly, through all the misery and isolation her illnesses caused her. CB was unapologetically herself and made her mark in the hearts of all whom she loved . One of the very best people I have or ever will know in this life. Wish she could have made it to Alaska and her beloved bears. And when the Bills win the Super Bowl ,the celebration will be less for her missing. I love you ,CB .. Betsy aka Brillo.
